Tsavo national park is found in Taita-Taveta County near Voi town covering an area of 13,747 square kilometers. The Park borders Mkomazi game reserve in Tanzania and Chyulu hills national park.
Tsavo consists of semi-arid grasslands and savanna and the Park is divided by the A109 road and railway into two sections such as; Tsavo west national park and Tsavo East national park.
Tsavo west is most popular for its splendid and magnificent scenery especially the Mzima springs which are a series of four natural springs in the Park.
The springs are one of the major attractions of wildlife in the Park such as hippos and crocodiles which are permanent residents there together with many other which usually go to the springs for drinking water when are thirsty.
Tsavo west is however also known for its rhino reserve, rich and varied wildlife, good road system, rock climbing, and the guided walks along Tsavo River to which the Park was named.
Rock climbing is one of the best activities in Kenya, solid gneiss walls are often covered in holds and free of vegetation. Cracks and corners abound but tend to be more vegetated. The most impressive piece of rock (the 300m high east face of Kichwa Tembo) attracted the first explorers and resulted in the ascent of Great Tsavo Chimney.
A more recent route (Ivory Tower on Elephant Rocks) also ranks with the best and hardest bush climb in Kenya. However unless climbing in the shade, an early start is more recommendable because it often gets very hot on clear days.
The activity is really of a lifetime experience after even viewing the abundance of wildlife in the Park plus the magnificent springs.
Tsavo East is generally flat compared to its mountainous counter park and also slightly larger with dry plains across which the Galana River flows.
The Tsavo East is also made up of many attractive features that will impress many visitors such as; the Lugard falls, Aruba dam, Mudanda rock and Yatta plateau. The Park is basically made of two main Rivers (Tsavo and Athi Rivers) which converge to form the Galana River.
The entire Tsavo national park (both east and west) is such a place of happiness that an African tourist should go and experience the amazing activities done there and enjoy its extraordinary wildlife.
The Park is a best place for viewing all Africa’s big five which include; the cape buffaloes, African elephants, African lions, rhinos and African leopards. The Tsavo lions are the most dominant and definitely the major attraction in the Park.
Due to many water bodies in the Park, the Park attracts many different wildlife species such as; Grevy’s and plains zebras, Masai giraffes, waterbucks, cheetahs, spotted gents, hyenas, African hares, lesser kudus, aardwolves, crested porcupine, ground pangolins, black rhinos, yellow baboons, caracals, Sykes’ monkeys and Vervet monkeys, impalas, bat-eared foxes, warthogs, suni, bush bucks, bush babies, klipspringers and jackals among others.
The Park is ideal for all sorts of safaris including the couple honey moons, wildlife safaris, hiking safaris and bird watching safaris since the Park inhabits over 500 bird species plus the photography safaris.
Inside the park, it is very difficult to leave due to its brilliance both in wildlife and the beautiful landscape which will offer you a memorable safari.
Various accommodations have been established in and around the Park to offer visitors with a comfortable stay such as; Ashnil Aruba safari lodge, Red elephant safari lodge, Galdessa camp, Voi wildlife safari lodge, Kilalinda safari lodge and many others.
